Why The Tongass Needs Your Help

Briefly, the Trump administration overturned President Clinton’s 2001 Roadless Rule’s protection of Southeast Alaska’s Tongass National Forest so that old-growth, clearcut logging could begin again. In March of 2021, the Roadless Area Conservation Act was introduced as a bill, that if ever passed, could legislate permanent protection of the Tongass, banning clearcut logging, as well as protecting other roadless areas in our national forests. Unfortunately, the State of Alaska does not support the Roadless Area Conservation Act and is working to keep it from becoming a law. However, many Alaskan residents and visitors adamantly disagree with the State of Alaska and are speaking out for the need for permanent protection of the Tongass National Forest in order to preserve our valuable old-growth rainforest, which provides wildlife habitats, clean air, and clean water.
